The article analyzes the reception and interpretation of literary and publicist works of L. N. Tolstoy on the pages of the democratic magazine "Slovo". On the material of the program articles M. A. Antonovich, P. D. Boborykin, D. A. Koropchenko, etc., the author considers the literary-critical and aesthetic position of the magazine.
