The article is devoted to the study of the historical development of the death penalty in Russia as one of the main types of criminal punishment. Different periods of Russian history are analyzed, starting from ancient times and ending with the present, which allows tracing the evolution of views on the death penalty and its application in different legal systems. The article reviews the main legislative acts regulating the use of the death penalty and discusses the socio-political and ethical aspects of its use. Special attention is paid to the period after the October Revolution of 1917, when the death penalty became one of the instruments of political terror. The author emphasizes that the death penalty has always been a subject of heated discussions and debates, and that its use in Russia varied depending on political and social conditions.
