The concept of medical secrecy appeared in the Hippocratic oath and was used in medical treatises of the middle ages. However, we should not forget that the duty of doctors to inform the authorities about infectious diseases appeared at the same time. Recognition of the medical secrecy importance has always required the adaptation of this term not only to the social, economic, political, medical values, but also the historical features of the era. Both professional and legal foundations of medical confidentiality have been constantly evolving. Confidentiality in medicine is not only a medical issue, but also a problem of a society. Medical confidentiality should be adapted only to changes of values in the society with a consensus of all parties. The issue of medical secrecy is particularly important in the implementation of telemedicine technologies.
