In this work, the genre characteristics of a text atributed to St. Gildas the Wise are investigated in the context of the early Middle Ages in Western Europe (the turn of the 6th century). Given the identified genre characteristics, the text is interpreted as a type of homily, which allows the author to describe the state of ecclesiastic rhetoric in post-Roman Britain. Determining the genre characteristics of the text allows the author to use it as a valuable source for the history of morals, church rhetoric, homiletics, church history, missionary activity, and other fields.
