The higher education is a traditional value in Russia. Young people consider higher education as a prerequisite for both professional and social career. This leads to a high competition for university admission. However, the first academic year becomes the last one for many freshmen. The largest number of students is expelled from universities based on the results of two finals. It can be explained by the inadaptability of freshmen to the university environment. The authors review the findings of a sociological survey conducted among the first-year students in Novosibirsk State University of Economics and Management. Its objective was to identify the problem of adaptation to the new lifestyle and academic environment and evaluate the impact of various factors on the student ability to cope with the above-mentioned problems. The sociological survey was carried out in the form of a questionnaire in the first and second terms of 2016-2017. The inquiry involved 210 freshmen majoring in 10 fields of study. The results were processed by means of SPSS products.
