The social genealogy of the first generation of soviet engineers in 1930's: the making of everyday life

Based on archival materials, the article reconstructs the social genealogy of the first generation of Soviet engineers educated in Soviet universities, revealing the influence of primary socialization, educational practices and participation in revolutionary events on their social behavior and the way of thinking. The study focuses on the engineers of the defense plants in the Western Urals: the old state artillery factory in Motovilikha and the new aircraft engine plant in Perm. The author makes a hypothesis that their participation in revolutionary events and Civil war was an integrating factor in the process of mastering Soviet culture. The article concludes that the legacy of primary socialization persisted in their behavioral strategies.
