The article analyzes the state of agricultural sector of the Buryat-Mongol Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republic (BMASSR) in the 1920s-1930s and social assistance provided by the state to rural working people. The study is aimed at identifying the reasons for the development of collective forms of economy management before the start of collectivization and creation of agricultural administrative bodies in the republic, where social assistance to the rural population of the republic became a separate political agenda. We have described the stages of development of social assistance to the rural population in the conditions of the BMASSR nation building, and presented a historical analysis of the creation of peasant societies for mutual assistance and cooperation, which made it possible to prepare the ground for socialist transformations in the agrarian sector of the economy and take a step towards future collectivization. The study of archival documents allowed us to identify the features of the formation and activities of peasant mutual assistance societies in the 1920-1930s, and to gain the historical experience of the further development of agriculture in the Buryat-Mongol Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republic.
