The article examines the social practice of the institute of motherhood in Russia, which ensures stability and order in society. The modern Russian family is undergoing radical changes in the processes of reproduction, education, upbringing and socialization of the younger generation. The social practice of motherhood manifests itself in providing conditions for the development of the child, is defined as part of the personal sphere of a woman and one of the main female roles. Motherhood performs socially significant functions for society and man. The main functions of motherhood are highlighted: emotional-intuitive, communicative, value-oriented, health-preserving, psychotherapeutic, socializing, educational, intermediary. It is determined that the mother occupies a socially significant role in society, is responsible for the upbringing and full-fledged development of the child, who will later become a full member of society.
