The authors of the article assume that the direction and dynamics of changes in the socio-economic sphere of the Russian regions are largely due to the demographic situation, which, in turn, is related to the peculiarities of the ethnic structure. According to the authors, long-term trends in fertility and mortality in Russia continue to be determined by a large Russian majority, whose situation requires attention and careful analysis, in particular, in comparison with the situation of other ethnic groups living in similar conditions. Their focus is on the subjects of the Volga Federal District with the most pronounced differences in ethnic structure. Based on statistics and sociological research, the authors make a conclusion about the necessity of regular monitoring the process of accumulation of negative potential in the socio-demographic sphere of regions, which has devastating consequences.
