The article deals with the definition of formal and non formal statuses of the USSR creative intelligentsia and evolution of its role in the social and political development of the Soviet society through 1960s 1980s. The author reveals the factors which caused the transition of certain Soviet intelligentsia groups from conformist loyal to the off system and anti system protest socio political behaviour. The role of the Soviet creative intelligentsia in the processes of social reformation is shown.
