Introduction: the article is devoted to the analysis of the socio-legal protection of military families during the Great Patriotic War. The relevance of this topic is due to the need to develop effective measures for comprehensive assistance to participants in the special military operation and their families. Materials and Methods: the authors have studied both published legal materials and unpublished documents from the State Archives of the Republic of Tatarstan, as well as the works of scholars that reveal the specifics of social policy during the Soviet period. The article was prepared using the principles of objectivity and historicism, as well as the historical-genetic and historical-comparative methods of research. Results: the article analyzes the socio-legal assistance provided to the families of military personnel during the Great Patriotic War using the example of the Tatar Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republic. The republic successfully implemented social and political initiatives to support the families of frontline soldiers. However, unfortunately, there was a certain degree of formalism in the implementation of state support measures for the families of military personnel and war veterans. The systematization of state social policy was achieved after the establishment of departments for state support and housing for the families of military personnel in the TASSR in 1943. In the following years, this had a positive impact on the financial situation of families of military personnel and disabled people who were in dire need. Discussion and Conclusions: during the Great Patriotic War, a system of social support for the families of military personnel and disabled people was established, which became the basis for creating a system of social and legal support for the families of participants in the special military operation in modern conditions. In the Tatar Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republic, as a major rear region of the country, there were some specific features of these processes, and the republic provided assistance not only to the families of Tatarstan soldiers, but also to hundreds of thousands of evacuees, including the families of military personnel, who also received support from the government. The leadership of Tatarstan had a dual responsibility for supporting the families of frontline soldiers and the evacuated citizens.
