The article presents a study devoted to identifying the causes of social inequality. The concepts of domestic scientists describing inequality from different positions, using methods for calculating social inequality and its consequences, were analyzed, and measures of state intervention that contribute to improving living standards were given. It was noted that these concepts do not bring significant improvement, but only mask an increasingly developed problem. The analysis of statistical data showed the existence of inequality in income, income and consumption in Russia. It is revealed that inequality in consumption is a consequence of the inequality of the spheres of the reproductive process, the swelling of the transactional sector, the dominance of the service sector over production activities. As a result, the idea of equality of the spheres of reproduction, the development of commodity production and exchange for the restoration of fair distribution and affordable consumption is proposed.
