Schizophrenia is a chronic disease that typically manifests in adolescence and at a young age. A significant share of the healthcare budget is spent on the treatment of this disease. Antipsychotic drugs are the main class of drugs used in the treatment of any schizophrenia and are often prescribed in the context of psychosocial interventions. While the course and outcomes vary markedly between different individuals, schizophrenia usually leads to a deterioration of professional and social functioning in these individuals and poses a huge burden to their family and environment. This is primarily the cost of providing care to patients. Indirect costs cover the loss of working capacity as a result of deterioration, disability and premature mortality, etc.
