The article presents a sociocultural approach to the analysis of Russian society. The aim of the study is to identify the social structure of the Russian region through the analysis of socio-cultural characteristics of modern society. The authors show current social contrasts and the structure of values in society. The problem of boundaries of social differentiation and its cultural aspects is considered. In the course of civilizational transformation and various stages of its historical development, society generates and develops new relations and connections. With the development of production there is a complication of systemic organization of the objects created in the form of products and activities, which leads to a complexity of relationships of all mankind. The most important place in civilizational development belongs to a knowledge society, i.e. society based on knowledge - it is the next and new stage of social development. Through education the intellectual, cultural, spiritual condition of society is formed. The socio-cultural approach to the study of society, unlike the social approach, is more complete, involving a combination of cultural integration and social differentiation. At that, man from the position of culture is a person, and from the perspective of social structure - an individual. Many existing models of stratification of Russian society at the empirical level help record and analyze its layered structure. In this paper, on the materials of sociological studies, the authors show the social structure of the Russian region and identify socio-cultural characteristics of modern society. It is revealed that the value space of the population varies with place of residence, level of education, age, sex, childbearing, etc. Life in small towns differs from life in the big cities and urban-type settlements, where the population appreciates independence. In rural areas, human life and traditions are most valuable. Significant differences in the structure of values are due to the financial situation. For people who are “wealthy”, “well-to-do” and “rich” not only human life, family, order are important, but also well-being. The financial prosperity of an individual is achieved largely due to its paramount importance among other values. These differences result in the existence of certain groups of communities that can ben seen in modern society.
