Sociological Research Methods in the Study of Linguistic Landscapes

The study of linguistic landscapes is part of the relatively young discipline of sociolinguistics. Sociolinguistic research methods are largely borrowed from sociology and linguistics. These methods enable researchers to understand how languages are used in various contexts, what functions they serve, and how they influence the social lives of people. This article provides a brief overview of sociological research methods in sociolinguistics, examines which sociological methods have been adopted in the study of linguistic landscapes, and presents examples of applying these methods in the study of the linguistic landscape of the city of Ulan-Ude.
