Sociology is considered as one of the sources of the theory of organization. Indeed, a number of theoretical approaches in the theory of organization have sociological roots. The article justifies the more complex, organic and genetic nature of relationship of sociology and the theory of organization. It has been found that emergence of both sociology and the theory of organization was determined by a number of wide institutional changes that had occurred in the Western Europe and the USA in the XVIII-XIX centuries. These changes can be described as the process of modernization. The authors state interconnection and interdependence of the development of sociology and organization theory.
