The preservation of Russian cultural heritage: a historical overview

The study analyzes the relevant problem of preserving the historical and cultural heritage of Russia. An integrated approach helps reveal the historical backgrounds to monument protection and the engagement of state and public organizations in this field. The research presents Russian and Moscow monument protection practices used in different historical periods. The emphasis is placed on architectural monuments and urban sites. The author discusses the involvement of scientists, builders, experts in conservation, restoration, and reconstruction of architectural monuments. Besides, the research highlights the role of authorities in identifying, studying, and preserving cultural heritage. Special attention is paid to the important historic monuments such as temples, buildings, and sculptures. In addition, the author defines the priorities for cultural heritage preservation policy and integration of monuments into the modern urban environment.
