The author considers one of the main indicators of population censuses that is the ratio of men and women. The characteristics of the population in terms of distribution by gender provides information on certain historical events, social and economic changes. The study of this value in relation to the population of Yakutia at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries reveals the features of indigenous and alien population and identifies the reasons for the predominance of any gender. The author determines that sex ratio among the indigenous population is approximately equal, although the researchers note the high mortality of women and infants. There is an increase in the number of men among the newcomers due to the peculiarities of the Far Eastern lands’ development (lands were mostly allotted to men; at the new location, male jobs were in demand). This is more evident in Olyokminsky District because of the presence of gold mines in this area, the peasants engaged in agriculture and the exiles primarily represented by men.
