Formation of concept "rivalry" in the history of philosophy is investigated. Two traditions in interpretation rivalry are considered: agonical and timitichesk. In agon its positive, creative party which leads to growth on-tentsiala participants is underlined. In the main thing - defeat of the contender and the statement of the superiority.
