The article compares views on peasant farming of the outstanding Soviet historian A. Anfimov and agricultural scientists of Russian emigration. The author shows that the Soviet agrarian-historical thought developed in isolation from the rich émigré scientific heritage. That is why, considering the depth of the analysis of the peasant question in Russia at the beginning of 20th century, A. Anfimov was not able to go beyond ideological coordinates existing in Soviet humanities, maintaining commitment to class approaches even after the decisive changes in the country and society at the turn of 1980s-1990s.
