The issues of assessing Russia’s economic development have become increasingly important in the context of the political instability of recent years associated with the outbreak of the sanctions war and its multiple intensification in 2022. It was expected that a large list of anti-Russian sanctions imposed would lead to a crisis in the economy and potentially its collapse, but the practice of 2022-2023 showed that the country has a large margin of safety. Therefore, in the context of the ongoing “sanctions war”, it is important to assess not only the economic development of countries, but also to conduct a comparative assessment. The study provides a comparative assessment of the main parameters of economic development in Russia and a number of countries around the world, identifying trends and their consequences based on the analysis of data series for 2016-2023. It was found that the country as a whole maintains a stable economic situation, while only in 2023 the GDP growth rate turned negative and there was a decline of 3.6%. Despite the continued growth in GDP and GNI by PPP, the level of purchasing power of the ruble in 2019-2021 was of the greatest importance during the period under study, and in 2022-2023. It decreased significantly, as a result of which the cost of 1 US dollar amounted to 26.7 rubles. Russia’s declining role on the world stage is also a negative factor, as its contribution to global GDP has decreased from 3.5% to 2.8% by 2023. A comparative assessment of GDP growth rates in Russia and some countries of the world showed that during the pandemic the country proved to be more stable and maintained the trend towards economic growth.
