The study described the situation of the First Division of the Black Sea Coastline created after the successful Russo-Turkish war of 1828-1829 and consisted of former Turkish fortifications passed to the Russian Empire according to the Treaty of Adrianople as well as built by Russian troops as a result of successful landing operations in the 1830s. The paper discussed the status of fortresses, fortifications and forts that were a part of the First Division of the Black Sea Coastline led by Major General A.O. Debu on the eve of the Crimean (Eastern) War. The research elaborated on such indicators of the coastline’s defense capacity as the number of different ranks in garrisons and overall characteristics of artillery in fortresses, fortifications, forts and villages in Kuban region. The author concluded that there was the staff shortage in garrisons of the First Division of Black Sea Coastline in the pre-war period as the troops had not been reinforced, and the redeployment of military personnel from one fortification to another solved this problem for a while.
