This article examines the trade and economic cooperation between the Islamic Republic of Iran and the Russian Federation during the second term of Seyyed Mohammad Khatami’s presidency from June 2001 to June 2005. In that period, the main areas of cooperation included trade, energy (nuclear), oil and gas, military equipment, transport, fishing industry. The parties signed the Treaty on the Foundations of Mutual Relations and the Principles of Cooperation which took the relations between these two countries to the next level, made their interaction dynamic and diversified. Besides, the International North-South Transport Corridor was opened. This fact intensified Iran-Russia trade relations. Moreover, the official visits took place, the delegations were exchanged, and military equipment cooperation was expanded. These actions contributed to the progressive development of contacts between Iran and Russia.
