Cooperation of the law enforcement bodies of the SCO participants on countering international terrorism and extremism

In the article, the authors identified the problems of law enforcement in the framework of the young but rapidly developing Shanghai Cooperation Organization as an international organization founded to strengthen stability and security in a wide area, fight terrorism, extremism, and strengthen cultural interaction between states. The threat of expanding the network of transnational crime today has become one of the main problems of the world community. This issue is especially acute on the agenda of the Eurasian region, in view of its cultural and ethnic diversity. In the 21st century, an increasing number of states are realizing how quickly extremist ideas are spreading, and to what extent interstate coordination in the fight against crime is important. The Shanghai Cooperation Organization has set a good example of such coordination. The article describes the attitude to the issue under study by the SCO member states, as well as analyzes the current regulatory framework of both the Shanghai Cooperation Organization itself and the organization’s member states. The main signs of extremism and terrorism, on which the rulemaking is based in the framework of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization, are highlighted. The formation of the SCO Regional Antiterrorist Structure as the main executive body of the SCO on combating crime, its main tasks and functions are described. The methods by which law enforcement activities of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization are implemented are given. The problems of the functioning of the SCO in the light of the fight against terrorism and extremism are identified, a comparative analysis is carried out with similar activities in the Asia-Pacific region. Methods are proposed for improving the SCO’s activities in combating terrorism and extremism.
