The paper explored some approaches to improve the curriculum of the social studies in the contemporary high school in Ukraine with a review of progress in learning techniques back in the XX century. The author''s approach to compiling a curriculum of the social studies in the contemporary high school. The paper suggested a curriculum for teaching the social studies to shape the following directions: a human being in self-actualization of his / her core nature; in interacting with people and natural environment; in occupation duties and in public activity.
