The paper analyses the achievements of national historical studies of the campaign against German domination which was held in Russia during the First World War. It was found that anti-German views went back to the formation of the German Empire. The author identifies the five basic stages of historiography on the issue from the early 20 th century and conceptual approaches formulated by the researchers. The author notes the increased attention to the issue at the turn of the 20 th and 21 st centuries when dozens of researches covering various aspects of repressive policies (such as their causes, organizational features and content, views in the Government and society, the results of the campaign, the reaction of Russian Germans, the condition of their loyalty to the Russian state) appeared. The author states the fragmentation of the studies and the absence of a comprehensive research. Among weak points of the current studies on the problem there are: lack of a comparative analysis of similar campaigns in different countries; little understanding of the state of anti-German views in the pre-war period; insufficiently complete reconstruction of the chronicles of the anti-German campaign; superficial coverage of the problem of deportation; incomplete discussion of loyalty / disloyalty of Russian Germans and a small degree of scrutiny of their response to repressive policies.
