The article deals with the current state and dynamics of problem debt and its components in the portfolios of domestic banks. According to the author, the organization of continuous monitoring, the results of which allow us to identify the main factors that affect the growth or decline of problem loan balances, is an important tool. The author shows that the restraining factors for the growth of overdue credit debt are the formation of effective procedures for identifying potential risks, constant monitoring of various components of the loan portfolio and the level of problem loans in it, as well as the creation of flexible adequate mechanisms for managing problem loans. Our research has shown that due to timely and effective measures of the regulator, the Russian banking system has passed the most acute period of the crisis (2015). However, its deferred effect, which is reflected in the growth of problem loans, continues to reduce the quality of Bank loan portfolios. Thus, an assessment of the current state of problem debt in the credit portfolios of Russian banks will help determine the strategic directions for reducing it and the most effective tools that are appropriate for achieving the goals set.
