The author analyses designing, modelling and creation of history-oriented information systems in the United States. It is an important stage of complex research of historical information system. The investigation of world experience in creating information systems allows to share methodological and theoretic basis for better modelling of systems and to show academic opportunities for researchers and users. Main attention is paid to the systems designed and created by different American institutions such as archival (museums and libraries), academic (universities and research funds) and some private organizations. The author determines two main strategies for system's designing. According to the first strategy, the institutions produce systems internally. According to the second one, systems are the result of the collaboration of organizations. The analysis of historical information systems shows that most of American information systems share access to digital forms of historical sources; some include developed research instrumental bases and only few of history-oriented systems use "work-in-process" approach for constant improvement.
