The human mind is the subject of research in both humanitarian and natural Sciences. A special role in the study of consciousness belongs to philosophy, because in its depths were first articulated theoretical aspects of the problem of consciousness. The article analyzes the issues related to the understanding of consciousness as a criterion for the reality of the world. According to the author, if the content of the consciousness of modern man's scientific knowledge, they determine the main ways of human existence. An important element in the structure of consciousness is knowledge, which in symbolic form reflect the world and represent the main interest of Homo sapiens. The first theoretical knowledge emerged as a result of human adaptation to the world, their need was determined by the struggle for existence. Gradually, the sphere of epistemology became separated and over time the knowledge appeared as the ideal structures that are not directly related to the practice of human rights. In the modern world the concept of “consciousness” and “knowledge” were considered as identical, and therefore, there are problems of definition of their essence, place and role in human life.
