This article reveals the features of innovation and continuity in the ballet "Mukha-Tsokotukha" by Boris Tishchenko (1968), to which the composer gave a subtitle - a symphonic fairy tale. Considering the specific character of the implementation of the genre of the symphonic fairy tale, the author of the article made an attempt to analyze the dramaturgy, the intonational-melodic structure and the features of the program content of the work. Comparing the text of the same name with the music of the ballet, it becomes clear that Chukovsky's children's poem has become merely a pretext for writing an entirely "childless" work, both in terms of imagery, and in the choice of musical means of expressiveness and forms of working with material. The composer's excellent knowledge of the deep principles of popular thinking, being modified, put the folklore-national level at the level of great artistic generalizations. The imaginative and ethical concept of the fairy tale, the nature of the psychological conflict in the plot and the possibility of self-expression in the humanistic sphere of struggle and the victory of Good over Evil became the basis of all subsequent creativity of Tishchenko.
