Sports as a catalyst for national development: Azerbaijan’s experience in hosting international events

The article examines Azerbaijan’s experience in hosting major international sports events as a powerful tool for socio-economic development, national image-building and global positioning. The author analyzes the historical prerequisites for the establishment of the country’s sports culture, including traditional sports, Soviet heritage, and the efforts made during the period of independence. Particular attention is paid to state policies prioritizing sports development, encompassing legislative initiatives, the construction of modern infrastructure, training of athletes, and the organization of large-scale events. Using specific examples, such as the First European Games, Formula 1 Grand Prix, Islamic Solidarity Games, and others, the article highlights the impact of these events on various aspects of the country’s life. Economic effects, including jobs creation, tourist influx, the development of small and medium businesses, and the integration of modern technologies into infrastructure, are explored. The role of major sporting events in raising Azerbaijan’s international prestige, contributing to the strengthening of diplomatic ties and positioning the country as a successful and modern state is emphasized.
