It is a widely spread opinion that modern medications are more efficient and less hazardous. However, new information has put that point of view under questioning. We researched foreign literature regarding this problem. After this review, we were not able to find any proof of a higher efficiency (excluding clozapine) or less side effects of modern medications. The side effects that appeared in each group of medications differed in characteristics. The most common side effect of typical antipsychotics are neurological, but in atypical, the side effects are mostly metabolic. We believe that there is not enough evidence to pick one group of medication over the other in the treatment of schizophrenia. Each clinical case needs an individual choice of therapy based on the advantages and disadvantages for each patient.
