Comparative analysis of Norwegian and Swedish migration to the USA in the 19th century

Бесплатный доступ

In the middle of the 19th century, Scandinavians began to move en masse to other places. One of these places was the United States of America. The number of Scandinavian immigrants has exceeded more than 500 thousand people. They were mostly from Norway and Sweden, both countries had similar reasons and prerequisites, but there were also differences. Sweden, which had a population of 5 million by the end of the 19th century, sent more immigrants to the United States than Norway. As for Norway, between 1825 and 1925, more than 800,000 Norwegians immigrated to North America - about a third of Norway's population - most of whom immigrated to the United States, and a smaller number immigrated to the Dominion of Canada. The article is devoted to a comparative analysis between Swedish and Norwegian migration, identifying commonalities and differences between the causes, prerequisites, migration itself and further development.
