The article is devoted to the place of the Mid-Volga region in the Russian historical and regional studies in the second half of XIX - the early XX centuries. The author compares the works of the prominent Russian historians, local historians, and local amateur historians. Particular attention is paid to the representations of the historical specifics of the Mid-Volga region in the historical writings.
