The middle ages and its symbols in European literature of the 19th century

The article deals with the perception of the Middle Ages in its symbols represented mainly by castles in the works of the European poets and writers of the 19th century. The author traces the evolution of their perception from an enthusiastic one characteristic of the romantics of the beginning of the century to a negative one manifested by the Parnassians in the second half of the century.
