In modern times, republicanism is a viable political doctrine claiming to be an alternative to liberalism and socialism. The author notes that the republican tradition has come a long way historically. Despite the existence of a common concept among the representatives of various scientific schools, the interpretation of the ideological essence of the category “republic” varies considerably. This is largely due to the heterogeneity of political cultures and historical eras to which the researchers themselves belong. The study of the genesis and evolution of republican ideas within the three historical schools will make it possible to establish the reasons for the noticeable distortion of the ideological essence of the modern model of the republic in the case of attempts to identify the classical model of republicanism as its political-philosophical source. With this goal in mind, it seems necessary to systematize existing approaches.
