The article considers the secular painting of V. M. Nesterov - "a novel in pictures", written in the late XIX-early XX century, whose basis was the literary works of P. I. Melnikov-Pechersky. The center of the study is the women's Old Believers prayer complex of clothing, referring to the Russian folk peasant costume of the XVII century
