The paper based on a variety of evidences of the observers of the second half of XIX - early XX centuries analyzes stable stereotypes of character and traditions of behavior of the Russian population of the Northern Urals, that regulated their daily life. Both personalities and generalized images of people are under analysis. Their ability to run the economy, skills to adapt to the environment, people's attitudes to each other were taken into account as well. The appeal to the complex of ethical aspects of human behavior gave the possibility to mark the factors that determined the development of skills and characters of people. Among them, habitat, occupations depending on the seasons of the year, family norms, generational relationships, religious beliefs were the most important factors. It was important that Russians were not mixed with Mansi in the analyzed region and only those who came from the central part of the Cherdyn district settled there. Russian communication with Mansi was only economic. The conditions of Russian life in the region has not changed for a long time; therefore, the patterns of the character and behavior seemed stable until drastic changes in the Soviet era. To assess the representativeness of the published material, the author used field material and visual observations as a result of numerous ethnographic expeditions.
