The periosteum of the tibial diaphysis of adult dogs was studied by the methods of light microscopy, and those of transmission and scanning electron microscopy and histomorphometry. It has been established that the periosteum of the area studied consists of an inner (osteogenic) layer and an outer (fibrous) one. Peiosteal osteogenesis is provided by the osteoblasts and pre-osteoblasts, arranged in the inner layer by 2-3 rows. The fibroarchitectonics of the outer layer of the periosteum is characterized by the presence of the flattened bundles of the collagen fibers and isolated elastic fibers, between which several layers of the spindle-shaped fibroblasts are located. The vessels of the microcirculatory bed of the periosteum are arranged in the oblique-and-transverse direction and accompanied by perivascular little-differentiated cells.
