The article deals with the debates of common law jurists and specialists in civil law about the Admiralty Court, which took place at the turn of the XVII century and demonstrated expansion of the conflict between two powerful legal systems, and its importance in the formation of the national identity of the British. The author describes the aspiration of civil law jurists to assign their legal system and institutions established under it the status of true national ones.
