Research competence phenomenon in the works of Russian and foreign researchers

Statement of the problem. Affecting the international exchange of knowledge and innovative technologies, modern geopolitical challenges form the need for Russia to intensively develop domestic intellectual power and accelerate the process of obtaining new scientific knowledge in order to achieve technological sovereignty. Such processes determine the relevance of studying research competence. The purpose of the article is to highlight the main approaches to defining research competence in pedagogical science based on the results of theoretical analysis of the work of Russian and foreign authors. The research methodology is based on a competency-based approach (V.A. Adolf, I.A. Zimnyaya, G.I. Ibragimov, V.P. Medvedev, etc.). The research methods are the analysis and generalization of Russian and foreign scientific works devoted to the definition of research competence.Research results. Over the past 20 years, pedagogical science has developed a number of approaches to the consideration of research competence: system, activity, value-activity, axiological, procedural-technological, competence-based, and synergistic. In the foreign literature, in general, research competence is considered as a set of skills for carrying out research activities. In addition, research competence, according to foreign scientists, is closely intertwined with the phenomenon of research literacy, which is a set of competencies associated with the cognitive activity of a subject. Conclusions. The variety of approaches to the definition and content of research competence, which has emerged in Russian and foreign science over the past 20 years, contributes to a comprehensive consideration of this phenomenon. Along with the development of society, modern trends towards digitalization, technologization and development of networking between universities and other organizations, there is a need to revise the components of research competence. This determines the relevance and necessity of further research aimed at identifying and substantiating the criteria characteristics and methods for developing the research competence of university students.
