Holy Trinity St. Nicholas Monastery and Society in the Last Decades before the Revolution

In the article, using the example of the Holy Trinity St. Nicholas Monastery, an attempt is made to analyze the history of the development of the ecclesiastical and social life of the Vladivostok Diocese in the late 19th–early 20th centuries. The author examines the church-social life of the monastery, studies the social ministry of monks in peacetime and wartime, missionary work, the activities of brotherhoods, spiritual education. The author describes the influence of the monks’ activities on the religious and moral life of the Far East. The economic activities of the monastery, the organization of aid to the peasants in peacetime and aid to the front during the First World War are also considered. The author reasonably substantiates that the Holy Trinity Monastery at the beginning of the 20th century became an integral part of the church and social life of the region, providing material assistance and spiritual support to the population in its needs and requirements. The article was written on the basis of a report presented at the All-Russian Scientific and Practical Conference “Empire and Church” (March 12–13, 2020), organized by the Historical Society of St. Petersburg Theological Academy.
