In this work it was hypothesized that political ideas of Plato and basic principles of totalitarianism have much in common. In order to find out if it is true a study was undertaken. In the study the works of such philosophers and political theorists as Hannah Arendt, Karl Popper and Friedrich Hayek were analyzed and basic principles totalitarian regimes were identified. Each of these principals was compared to the political ideas which were described by Plato in his dialogs “Republic” and “Laws”. As a result, considerable similarities were found between the ideals of the ancient philosopher and the main hallmarks of totalitarianism, which were described by the modern social scientists. Therefore it was concluded that the initial hypothesis was confirmed.
