This article presents use of the term “freedom of choice” (Greek προαίρεσις) by St. John Chrysostom in Interpretation on the Epistle of Paul the Apostle to the Romans. Initially philosophical term proairesis was included into patristic divinity since the Holy Fathers comprehended human nature in theological way. One of the main attributes of the God’s image in the person is freedom, and the key aspect of it is personal freedom. Within this framework personal freedom is realized through the will, and freedom of choice is one of the stages of volition. The saint in the interpretation of the Epistle focuses on human nature, and often handles this term to solve problems and difficult passages in the Epistle of Paul the Apostle to the Romans.
