Within the framework of this work, the essence of free economic zones is analyzed, their role and importance for the development of the Russian economy is investigated. The changes in the legislation related to the functioning of free economic zones are analyzed. At the end of the study it is concluded that the functioning of free economic zones in Russia is effective
