KV-1: history

The article examines the creation of the legendary Soviet heavy tank KV-1; contribution of KB Zh. Ya. Kotin to the development of this model. Along with the advantages, the shortcomings of the KV-1 tank and the reasons for their occurrence are analyzed. The article shows that the defense industry of the USSR on the eve of the attack of Nazi Germany rapidly developed new types of armored vehicles, including the KV-1 tank, which combined the maximum possible indicators of fire power, protection and mobility. The authors come to the conclusion that the technical parameters of the tank after the modification largely corresponded to modern requirements for weapons of this type and played an important role in the first and second stages of the great Patriotic war, thanks to its quality characteristics, the combat crews of Soviet tankers made a serious contribution to the defeat of the enemy.
