The article examines the technique of spectral music as one of the most important trends in contemporary musical composition. The focus is on the specifics of using timbre as a fundamental structural element of a musical work. The main emphasis is on the creative method of French composers Tristan Murail and Gerard Grisey, who are representatives of the spectral trend. Both the theoretical foundations of spectral technique and practical methods of its application in composer's work are studied.
