This work is devoted to the study of telescoping as a productive way of word formation. The article analyzes the theoretical approaches to the definition of telescopes, presented in the works of G. Paul and H. Sweet. They consider this phenomenon as a process of merging lexical units while maintaining the semantic load of the original components. The relevance of the study of telescoping in the context of trends towards linguistic economy and creativity is substantiated. The classification of telescope words developed by N.V. Belyaeva is presented, with the allocation of four main models: NC, NP, PP and NN. In addition, the problem of classifying the fragmentation elements involved in telescoping based on the criterion of their uniqueness is considered.
