Television in the modern cultural space: crisis and revaluation of values

The article notes that the transformation of television into the main form of communication in the second half of the twentieth century marked truly revolutionary changes in culture. Its characteristic properties as mass communication media, development trends of domestic television under the influence of changes in the political system, globalization and the spread of Western mass culture are revealed. The processes of television commercialization on the background of the formation of a market economy are investigated. It is shown that television, like cinema, copies reality, expands ideas about it, while acting on the deeper layers of consciousness, appeals to the archetypes of the collective unconscious. The various functions of television in modern society are shown; television is explored as part of commercial mass culture. The desire for hype is seen as a feature of modern media culture. It is shown that Russian television is currently in crisis, it is no longer the leading means of communication and the main source of information. Television is losing a youth audience that goes on the Internet. The causes of the crisis of Russian television are revealed.
