Food production and supply trends in Russia

In accordance with the Food Security Doctrine, one of the strategic national priorities of the Russian Federation is sufficient and timely food supply for the population. At present, Russia is characterized by an insufficient level of self-sufficiency in meat, dairy products, vegetables and melons. At the same time, the average Russian, with a significant malnutrition of animal protein (dairy products), overeats less nutritious foods (potatoes, bread, sugar). An irrational level of nutrition of the Russian population can lead to a deterioration in the well-being and health of Russians, a decrease in the quality of the nation's gene pool and a decrease in life expectancy. The parameters of agricultural production in Russia are generally increasing. However, in the last year there was a decrease in the volume of meat production in the Siberian, Far Eastern, Ural and Southern Districts. The production of grain and potatoes decreased in the North Caucasus, Ural, Siberian and Far Eastern Districts, and in the latter, in addition, the production of vegetables and melons decreased. Taking into account the assessment of the level of food self-sufficiency, the revealed decrease in the production of meat, vegetables and melons in the indicated federal districts can be regarded as critical. In addition, the Urals and Far Eastern Districts, along with the North-Western District, are among the top three outsiders in terms of the per capita value of agricultural production. The study showed that Russia needs a significant study of the regional agri-food policy and the implementation of a set of measures aimed at increasing the level of food self-sufficiency, especially in the context of the ongoing food embargo. The identified problems of food self-sufficiency contain strategic socio-economic threats and require government involvement and targeted management.
